Usa Freedom Act Of 2015

USA Freedom Act: New Approach Effective November 29, 2015

Background

On June 2, 2015, the Senate passed the USA Freedom Act, a landmark piece of legislation that restored and modified several provisions of the Patriot Act. The new approach will become effective on November 29, 2015, following a six-month transition period from the previous system.

Key Provisions

The USA Freedom Act includes several key provisions, including:

  • Ending the bulk collection of telephone metadata by the National Security Agency (NSA).
  • Requiring the NSA to obtain a warrant to collect telephone metadata in specific cases.
  • Increasing transparency and accountability in the government's surveillance programs.
  • Establishing a Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board to review the government's surveillance activities.

Implementation

The transition to the new approach outlined in the USA Freedom Act will begin on November 29, 2015. The NSA will have six months to comply with the new requirements, and other agencies involved in surveillance activities will also have to make adjustments to their practices.

Impact

The USA Freedom Act is expected to have a significant impact on the government's surveillance programs. The new approach is designed to protect privacy while still allowing the government to conduct necessary surveillance activities. The act is also expected to increase transparency and accountability in the government's surveillance programs.
